Snowball

Snowball was trapped in a garage where he was eating cat food.  His foot had 2 large pictures we believe from the trap he was caught in and a small sore one his face.

Snowball is a true young adult albino raccoon meaning he has no melanin production or lack of pigment in his skin and eyes.  Many albinos are consider to be  only partial albinos as they will have blue eyes but as you can see Snowball has pink eyes or lack of color allowing the blood vessels to show through.  1 in ten thousand will be true albinos.

Albinism is associated with a number of vision defects and Snowball is having problems with Photophobia and Nystagmus. Nystagmus means involuntary eye movement and Photophobia is a symptoms of excessive sensitivity to light and aversion to sunlight or well-lit places.

Animals with albinism lack their protective camouflage and are unable to conceal themselves from their predators or prey; and often they own kind will turn on them. The survival rate of animals with albinism in the wild is usually quite low, most of them rarely reach adulthood.    Snowball has beat the odds but in a new location he would not stand a chance.

Snowball has been relocated to  Herd Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary where he will be able to live out his life with proper care as an educational animal.  All animals are provided species appropriate daily enrichment. Veterinary health inspections occur every three months unless otherwise indicated. Each habitat will include species specific “hides,” shelters and landscape features. Each unit has a security entrance. Units in the sun are partially covered by shade-cloth. Wire trail fence/barrier prevents public contact with animals
